‘Barnum’ the musical was created by Mark Bramble, with lyrics by Michael Stewart, and music by Cy Coleman. It is based on the life of showman P. T. Barnum, covering the period from 1835 through 1880 in America and major cities of the world where Barnum took his performing companies. The production combines musical theatre with the colourful and mesmerising spectacle of the circus. Stand out songs include ‘There’s a sucker born ev’ry minute’, ‘The colours of my life’ and ‘One brick at a time’. During it’s Broadway run, starring Jim Dale and Glen Close, ‘Barnum’ won three coveted Tony Awards including ‘Best Scenic Design’ and ‘Best Costume Design’. In the UK the musical drew wide acclaim whilst in the West End, with star Michael Crawford receiving the Laurence Olivier Award for ‘Best Actor in a Musical’.
