Taunton Amateur Operatic Society

Formed in 1900, Taunton Amateur Operatic Society (TAOS) has celebrated over 100 years of consistent musical theatre and as such is one of the oldest operatic societies in existence.

The society produces a spring and autumn show for which open auditions are available to all members. Auditions for new members are held twice yearly. Both shows are currently staged at the Brewhouse Theatre (seating capacity 350) Taunton.

The Spring Show varies from modern musicals to traditional ones, whilst the Autumn Show (a smaller production) is often a traditional Gilbert and Sullivan operetta. Well-regarded professional directors using local music directors direct both shows. Scenery and costumes are hired and the productions are based on eight performances, two of which are matinees. Regular rehearsal nights are Wednesdays from 7.30pm.

TAOS members are also involved in giving concerts to support local charities and the Society has a thriving social committee. TAOS has its own rehearsal location at Callabaut Hall, which has excellent facilities, and this is also let out to other local groups. The Society has a strong associate membership, which is entitled to priority bookings for both shows, before the Box Office opens.

The Society is a consistent winner of both NODA and Rose Bowl awards and is an accepted stepping-stone for those who wish to join the professional theatre.

Join Us!

We regularly audition new members to the society, but it is not just singing and dancing. There is a huge range of other activities needed to put on a show – such as costume, make-up, props, set hands and other blackgang duties – so come and get involved.

• Active Members – Can take part in any of the shows throughout the year. Dancing, singing, acting, black gang, props, costumes, make-up! Whatever you fancy, do get in touch with Helen West our secretary on 01823 413800

Why not also join us during our other events throughout each year. We regularly have social events for members and non-members. For example we have:

• Taunton Operatic Charity Entertainers who visit towns and villages in somerset and perform a vast array of songs to help raise money for a chosen charity. It is always a well attended and fun evening. Upcoming concerts to be listed here soon…

• The annual quiz night for members & friends usually held during february. This is a fun evening not to be missed!

• The annual TAOS Ball held during october each year. A chance to dress glamourous and enjoy and a 3 course meal and dancing.
